SURPRISE CHEF SUBURBAN BREEZE

Melbourne's Surprise Chef describe themselves as "cinematic soul journeymen", and that is certainly the case when listening to their new record Education and Recreation. Lifted from the new record, the band release a physical 7" record containing 'Money Music' as the A-side and 'Suburban Breeze' as the B-side on New York's staple soul label Big Crown. Both tracks are heavy-hitters, but it's the B-side that particularly takes our fancy. 'Suburban Breeze' opens dramatically with an ascending synth and rolling snare, as if red velvet curtains are unveiling the song. Sustained piano chords bleed slowly like wet ink whilst Erica Tucceri's flute part is the main narrator, telling a story that requires patience as the time unfolds. The minimal, yet confident bass combined with occasional off-beat piano hits are a subtle nod to original dub sounds, whilst the organ hints to 60s British soul. The song moves between floaty and groovy to urgent and snappy, honouring the changeability of human emotion. Order the 'Money Music' and 'Suburban Breeze' 7" single here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
